Welcome to

Whitchurch History Cymru

Walking Whitchurch Heritage (WWH) was a project funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and Cadw from January - December 2022. The aim of the project was to bring the past alive to enrich the present through the development of a series of waymarked walks in Whitchurch Village.

However the roots of WWH lie firmly within AWEN@thelibrary, the support group that emerged to fight the proposed closure of Whitchurch Library in 20xx. AWEN@thelibrary does not aim to take over the day to day working of the library but rather to support the library by promoting cultural activities relating to it and the local area. AWEN means inspiration in Welsh and stands for Arts, Whitchurch, Eglwys, Newydd.

A strong theme from AWEN's work is local history, and a monthly Reminiscence Group meets at Whitchurch Library (now renamed Whitchurch Hub) and Nigel Lewis a co-facilitator of the Reminiscence Group also writes a weekly blog - 101 things that you probably didn't know about Whitchurch. It is from the Reminiscence Group and the 101Things that the idea for Walking Whitchurch Heritage emerged.

The final action of the funded project was to set in train permanent history boards for two locations in the Village and the framework for this website, recognising that there was so much local history enthusiasm and information emerging, that it merited its own searchable site. However we continue to maintain very close links with AWEN@thelibrary and with the AWEN@thelibrary website. Happily we will continue to share the AWEN@thelibrary Facebook page. We look forward to this site growing content and usefulness over the years to come and welcome your input!

Count de Lucovich

Most people know about the Booker family and their connection to Melingriffith, but how many, I wonder know about Count de Lucovich, Antonio Leonardo Trifone and his family who also lived in Whitchurch about the same time.
