Welcome to

Whitchurch History Cymru

Looking to learn more about the history of Whitchurch? Have knowledge of old Whitchurch that would add to this site? Whitchurch History Cymru aims to cover both points and we are working to grow its content and usefulness over the years to come.

This site has been set up by AWEN@thelibrary, the support group that emerged to fight the proposed closure of Whitchurch Library in 2015. AWEN@thelibrary supports the Whitchurch Library (now Hub) by promoting cultural activities relating to it and the local area. AWEN means inspiration in Welsh and stands for Arts, Whitchurch, Eglwys, Newydd.

A strong theme for AWEN's work is local history and as part of this:

  • A monthly Reminiscence Group meets at Whitchurch Hub.
  • A facilitator of the Reminiscence Group (Nigel Lewis) wrote a weekly blog - 101 things that you probably didn't know about Whitchurch
  • Three local heritage walks were created and documented, through the Walking Whitchurch Heritage project.
  • Permanent history boards were put up in two locations in the Village
  • This website was set up recognising that there was so much local history enthusiasm and information emerging, that it merited its own site.

We look forward to this site growing in content over the years to come and welcome your input!

William Vachell and his Mystery House

William Vachell (who was born in 1796) was a leading member of a well-known family firm of druggists in Cardiff in the nineteenth century. His father was a ships surgeon during the French Revolutionary wars and his brother Charles (and fellow druggist) became Mayor and developed houses in Charles Street (named in honour of their father).
